Belanov’s barrage
NZPA-Reuter Mexico City Igor Belanov became only the second player in World Cup finals history to score a hat-trick and finish on the losing side when he hit three goals for the Soviet Union in yesterday’s 4-3 second round defeat by Belgium.
In the 1938 finals Ernest Willimowski hit four goals as Poland went down 5-6, to Brazil in a first round match. Brazil’s Leonidas also scored four that day on his way to becoming the tournament’s leading scorer with eight goals.
