Fish for surveys deals
PA Wellington The Ministry of Fisheries has signed three deals to swap fish quotas for ship charters in its deepwater trawl surveys this winter. They are: •Z A Chatham Rise orange roughy survey, using the freezer trawler Otago Buccaneer owned and run by Fletcher Fishing, Ltd, for 28 days in exchange for 1600 tonnes of orange roughy. • A Challenger Plateau orange roughy survey, using the ice vessel Arrow, owned and run by Sealord Products, Ltd, for 28 days in exchange for 1120 tonnes of orange roughy. • An east coast North Island orange roughy survey, using the freezer trawler Otago Galliard, Fletcher Fishing, Ltd, for 28 days in exchange for 1600 tonnes of orange roughy, most of which would be caught after the survey on Chatham Rise and Challenger Plateau. The Minister of Fisheries, Mr Moyle, said all vessels were selected under an open tender. The surveys continued work conducted by the Fisheries Research Division over several years. The results from the surveys would be used to review the total annual catch quotas for orange roughy, he said.
