Kanturk likely to reveal true potential today

By

G. K. YULE

More than two years ago Kanturk was regarded as one of the top three-year-olds among a crop which included Roydon Glen, Freightman, Lord Louie and Josephine Bret, all of which he beat in races at Addington Raceway.

Since his three-year-old racing, which included victories in the Cross Stakes and the Celebrity Stakes, both run at Addington In February, 1984, Kanturk’s part-owner and trainer, Bruce Francis, has experienced a frustrating time with the speedy son of Lordship and Kiatina.

After competing on New Zealand Cup day, in 1984, he went amiss and had only five starts for four placings before having to be put aside last season.

Kanturk came back to racing at Forbury Park in April where he put in a dismal run after which it was found he was below his peak physically. He looked in need of a race when paraded on the first

day of the Nelson meeting. In spite of that he went an outstanding race when a close fifth to the upset winner, Sure He Can.

If Kanturk has made the improvement expected from Saturday's run, he should go close to victory in the 0. L. Goldsmith Jewellery Handicap on the second day of the meeting at Richmond Park today. Shipmate and Lordic could be the pick of the remainder, but Golden Mann, Thornlea, Embark and Mark Seven went well enough on Saturday to be considered at least as place chances. Hemihana might not be the most perfect-actioned pacer about, but he will have to improve little on

his first-day second to Shipmate to come out on top in the second leg of the main double, the Jones Memorial.

Lady Noodlum and Kotare' Pewter were first-day winners in a slower class and they could be as good as any others in a rather open field. There will also be support for Chummy, Timely Rule, Young Countess and Vonnie’s Charm.

Young Countess, like her stablemate, Lordic, will be driven by Richard Brosnan, who had no luck with either horse on Saturday.

Brosnan made the return trip from Kerrytown to Nelson by road on Saturday and will repeat the experience today.
