AUSTRALIA Markets stay bearish

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed easier with market sentiment remaining bearish amid investor uncertainty over the direction of the market. Near the close, the all ordinaries index had eased 7.1 points to 1209.2 and the all industrials 11.3 to 1919.7. The all resources shed 3.9 to 670.8 and the gold index 0.9 to 947.3. National turnover was 54.1 million shares worth sAust9o.sM with falls outnumbering rises 265 to 199. BHP finished the day steady on 886 c, after reaching a low of 882, in subdued trading. Other players in the most recent BHP take-over battle were easier. BHP ally, Elders IXL, lost 10c to 470, Bell Resources 10c to 425 and the Bell Group 6c to 944.
