Mansell wins Canadian G.P.

NZPA-Reuter Montreal Nigel Mansell of Britain squeezed bis Williams through traffic coming out of a tight turn on the twentyfirst lap yesterday to regain the lead and go on to win the Canadian Grand Prix formula one motor race. Mansell's second consecutive grand prix victory, fourth of his career, vaulted him into a tie for second place, with the former leader Ayrton Senna of Brazil, in the World Championship standings. Alain Prost, of France, whose 20s pit stop might have cost him the victory, finished second, but edged out Senna at the top of the standings. Prost’s McLaren teammate, Nelson Piquet, of Brazil, was

third. Mansell used his pole position on this narrow circuit to jump off to more than a 5s lead by the tenth lap, but Keke Rosberg of Finland, driving a McLaren, cut Mansell’s lead in half by the thirteeth lap, and passed Mansell two laps later. Prost was third at the time.

The Briton regained the lead on a hairpin turn when he and Rosberg were lapping the Australian, Alan Jones on the twenty-first lap of the 69lap race, excluding the warmup lap, over the 4.410-km (2.74 miles) Gillies Villeneuve circuit.

French grand prix driver, Patrick Tambay, escaped with bruising to his chest and left leg in a spectacular crash

during the warm-up. The Lola Ford driver wanted to take part in the race, but the circuit doctor refused him permission. Tambay’s car left the track just after the first bend and hurtled into a safety barrier.
