Cathay will go without Air N.Z.

NZPA staff correspondent Hong Kong Cathay Pacific is prepared to go ahead without its former partner, Air New Zealand, in restarting the direct air link between Hong Kong and Auckland which ceased in February last year, a Cathay spokesman said. The two airlines have been unable to agree terms for getting the direct air route under way and Cathay told NZPA in December that it had shelved plans for the joint service.

Air New Zealand offers excursion fares on Europe and United States-bound

traffic through Singapore, Tokyo and Los Angeles but was not prepared to provide the same incentive fares via Hong Kong, Cathay said in December. A spokesman, Mr David Bell, told NZPA that Cathay Pacific had approached the Hong Kong and New Zealand Civil Aviation authorities with a proposal to run its own once-weekly flight. He was not prepared to comment on the airline’s relationship with the New Zealand flag-carrier and said he hoped Air New Zealand might participate on the route at a later date.
