Liner welcomed by Rotuman residents

NZPA Suva A Rotuman ceremony of welcome greeted the passengers and crew of the Sydney-based cruise liner Fairstar when she anchored off Oinafa Beach in Rotuma yesterday morning. Reports from the island, north of Fiji, said there was no sign of the trouble threatened by some people on the island who opposed the visit. The report said the 28 policemen from Suva who

had sailed to Rotuma stayed in the area. The visit is the first by a tourist cruise liner to Rotuma, Fiji’s farthest territory. The ship is reported to be carrying 7400 tourists, mainly from Australia. Rotuma’s representative in the Fiji Senate, Kamoe Petero, said on Thursday that the Rotuman Island Council would seek independence from Fiji if the Fiji Government allowed the Fairstar to visit the island.
