Burnside snatches win

Burnside I snatched a lastminute win against Woolston in the main match of the New Zealand Permanent senior women’s hockey championship at Hagley Park on Saturday. In the early match of the day, the improved defence of Pegasus combined with Selwyn’s lack of ability to score from the amount of possession it had resulted in a scoreless draw. In the other two matches, a spirited Bumside II team nearly upset Liquorland Harewood after being up 2-0 at one stage, but eventually lost, 2-3, while Carlton swamped a hapless Homby team, 14-0. In a deferred match played at Nunweek Park yesterday moniing in wintry conditions, Carlton beat Selwyn, 2-1, after an even match. The points table is:

SELWYN 0, PEGASUS WORMALD 0 All Todd was the hero of the day for Pegasus, when it held Selwyn to a scoreless draw. , Selwyn’s attack was led by Trish Harie and Barb Mitchell, who combined well and played aggressively. However, they lacked support on many occasions, not being

able to play the ball wide to their wines.

The last 15 minutes were played at a hectic pace. However, the Pegasus defence, in which Geneva Kara was prominent, remained solid. BURNSIDE I 3

(S. Duggan, J. Sperry) A goal scored less than a minute from full time clinched a win for Bumside against Woolston in an evenly fought match at Hospital Corner.

In their first-round encounter Woolston had soundly outplayed its opponent, beating Burnside 2-0. However, Saturday’s match was more evenly balanced, both teams having their chances. It looked as though Bumside was going to have a comfortable win when it was up 2-0 at half-time. Leanne McFadden scored from a pass from Jane Earnshaw at a penalty corner.

The Bumside defence held and fought its way back into the match. From a penalty comer Mary Clinton scored.

Prospects looked bleak for Woolston, but it came back with Chris Arthur leading the charge. Her quick acceleration and skilful stickwork were a feature of the Woolston forward line. She was well supported by Sue Duggan and Janet Sperry in penetrating the Burnside defence. Duggan scored a fine goal, eluding several players before slotting the ball into ,th.e net___

Revitalised, Woolston continued to attack and was rewarded 10 minutes later when Sperry scored from a penalty comer. With only a minute left to go, Judy Phillips and McFadden combined in a good passing movement, the latter making no mistake with the finishing shot

LIQUORLAND HAREWOOD 3 (M. Flannery 3), BURNSIDE II 2 (K. Trolove 2)

A fired-up Burnside II nearly caused the upset of the day in its match against Harewood. Kate Trolove took the Harewood team by surprise, by scoring a superb goal only two minutes into the match. Five minutes later, after a strong ran down the right wing by Andrea Piesse, Trolove scored again.

Burnside II continued to bustle the Harewood team for the remainder of the half, using long, hard hits and aggressive running. Featuring in the forward line was the right wing, Piesse, who was ably supported by Andrea Divine and Sharon Bell. Minutes before half-time Maree Flannery was successful with a penalty corner for Harewood. Flannery, who scored again for Harewood to even the scores, completed a hat-trick of goals late in the match. CARLTON 14 (C. Thompson 6, S. Haig 5, S. Edmondson 1,

Carlton swamped Hornby from the opening whistle and continued to overwhelm it

until at half-time the score was 11-0. Carlton camped almost continually in Hornby’s territory. As the sun left the playing field behind adjacent pine trees so did the enthusiasm of the Carlton team, as it meandered its way to three second-half goals. For Carlton, Shirley Haig and Cathy Thompson were less prominent than in other matches but still performed the basic skills efficiently. Henrietta Carroll worked tirelessly in midfield picking up loose ball, often to distribute it with insufficient care. It was encouraging to see the good, elusive dribbling skills of Vicky Inch, who more than once left her opponents in her wake. CARLTON 2 (S. Edmondson, S. Haig) SELWYN 1 (T, Harte) Carlton completed its matches for the first round by beating Selwyn, 2-1, in a deferred match yesterday morning. It was played at a fast pace, the Carlton forward line’s acceleration to the ball a telling factor, against a Selwyn defence which took time to settle. Carlton was first to score when Sue Edmondson goaled from a rebound from a high ball.

Trish Harte was soon successful from a penalty comer variation for Selwyn, bringing the scores level soon after half-time.

Shirley Haig scored the winning goal for Carlton.
