Outbreak of measles in Christchurch
Measles and whooping cough appear to have broken out in Christchurch. Although exact numbers were not available, the deputy Medical Officer of Health, Dr Mel Brieseman, said he had received reports of English measles in Christchurch, and several of whooping cough. A few children with measles had been admitted to hospital but were not seriously ill. The incidence of measles was unusual, particularly as the department had a national immunisation programme, said Dr Brieseman. It also appeared to be affecting more older children than usual. There were some gaps in the vaccination programme and some of the present cases were probably caused by children who had not been im-
munised. A change in the age at which the vaccination was given, now 12 months instead of 10 months, may also have had an effect. Measles was often considered a "spotty flu-like” disease. However, it could cause serious problems to the lungs, ears, and even brain, if compounded with secondary bacteria infection, said Dr Brieseman. Whooping cough, which children are usually vaccinated against, could also be serious if contracted under the age of 12 months. Both diseases appeared very similar to colds or flu in the early stages. It was not until the rash or cough appeared that the diseases were apparent Any child with flu or cold-like symptoms should be kept home and a doctor consulted early.
