Shipping news

The deepening world shipping recession will place increasing pressure on New Zealand harbour boards, according to the Port Authority annual report tabled in Parliament recently.

The chairman of the authority, Rear-Admiral Michael Sauli, said that the recession encouraged ship owners to economise, and use bigger ships. One leading multi-purpose carrier, Scan Carriers, Ltd, had increased the size of ships trading to New Zealand three times in the last 18 months.

"Others, such as Jebsen Line and Gearbulk, have 40,000-tonne vessels on the New Zealand run,” said Mr Sauli.

"Increases of this magnitude in ship sizes could pose problems for those secondary ports with major length and draught restrictions.” Such ports could be forced to make expensive development which would result in fewer ship calls, and only minor increases in cargo. Mr Sauli said that of particular concern was the potential need for capital dredging, heavy-duty wharves and back-up space, and increased tug capability.
