WAIPA R.C.

Special correspondent Auckland Mister Lumlee looks well placed at Te Awamutu tomorrow for a return to the good middledistance form he developed some 18 months ago and repeated when beginning this present season. Such a capable sprinter, as he demonstrated through last winter, Mister Lumlee had earlier shown his worth when going further second and third over 2200 m at Avondale and placed as well over 1900 m at Rotorua. It was in June and July last year that Mister Lumlee sprinted so well, to run up four wins in the space of five starts, and in the previous summer that he shaped up so promis-

ingly over the longer courses. Last October, with the ground still soft, he took a class two 2000 m at Ellerslie in style. Now nearly five, Mister Lumlee made clear with his win at Te Rapa last month, and third placing at Ellerslie during the Great Northern carnival that he is as good as ever: They have been his only two races since he came back from a spell, probably sufficient to prepare him for a bold bid over the 2000 m of the Lion Red Te Awamutu Cup.

Avitt and Document are very likely the two that Mister Lumlee will find hardest to beat with Greatness also a prospect. Avitt, an eight-year-old and much travelled, con-

tinues to wear well. It was a good late run that brought him his second placing behind Melbeck over 1600 m at Hawera last month and another stout finish that landed him third behind Melbeck and Another Phenomenon in the 1600 m York Handicap on Nescafe Steeplechase day. Document is a last-start winner, over 2200 m at Rotorua some three weeks ago and very consistent taken all round. Another Phenomenon turned in a couple of solid performances during the Great Northern meeting, second each time over 1600 m. A question is whether, this time, he will manange 2000 m.
