AUSTRALIA Renewed BHP interest

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed slightly firmer, with investor nervousness ahead of the Prime Minister, Mr Hawke’s, address to the nation, offset by renewed interest in BHP.

There were plenty of rumours about BHP and this had affected the market, one broker said.

At the close of trading, the all-ordinaries index had firmed 3.1 points to 1225.4
