Avon’s Gold main Te Aroha hope

Special correspondent Auckland At practically level weights Avon’s Gold gave I’m James such a good race at Ellerslie last Saturday that he must rate highly among the prospects at the Te Aroha Jockey Club’s meeting today. He faces several very useful opponents, though, in the class-three South Auckland Racing Club Handicap, which is the T.A.B. trifecta event. Morsel is one Avon’s Gold will have to beat. Others include Coloden and Brakes Off. There was just half a length between I’m James and Avon’s Gold at the end of the 1200 metres Blandford Lodge Handicap last Saturday after they had raced pretty close together through the last 200 metres. In his previous attempt Avon’s Gold finished third in a class-two 1300 metres at Ellerslie on April 29. He came fourth the time before that so he is racing very solidly. Morsel, a three-year-old filly, is racing equally well, as though she could win again at any time.

Her last-start second placing, behind Super Roo, at Pukekohe on May 28, held plenty of merit as did her third, three starts back, behind Bourbon Boy and The Red Jack, at Te Rapa. Brakes Off and Coloden

are both recent winners, Brakes Off in his latest attempt, at Pukekohe on May 28, and Coloden the time before last, at Avondale, on May 16. Regal Road, a four-year-old from Pukekohe, seems the one to beat in

the first leg of the double, the Swney Memorial. The second leg, the Second Domain Plate, a class-four 1200 metres, looks more open with Dandy Devil, Petty Sessions and McCaffrey among the chances.
