Violent crime

Sir, — I do not believe, as Vernon Wilkinson (“The Press,” June 6) suggests, that schoolteachers should have the attributes of Solomon, Christ and Henry Ford. There are enough of those around already. I do, however, have high expectations of schoolteachers as I do of all professionals. Just what sort of professional is (t, who, as Mr

Wilkinson suggests, will go about resorting to sarcasm if he is not allowed to thump difficult clients? Take for example any Department of Social Welfare boys’ home. Under existing legislation, the Education Department schoolteacher at that home can lawfully thrash a boy (although it is extremely unlikely he or she ever would). On the other hand, any residential social worker at that home who resorted to this would be charged with common assault and sacked. In this example and in Mr Wilkinson’s opinion, does existing legislation encourage and reflect a higher degree of professionalism in schoolteachers, or in residential social workers? — Yours, etc., DAVID SHANKS. June 6, 1986.
