P.M.S. has biological basis
A Melbourne psychiatrist says physical problems are increasingly being found in premenstrual syndrome (PMS) sufferers. Psychiatrist Lorraine Dennerstein told the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Congress that two trials of treatment for 47 women who had severe PMS suggest the Syndrome has a biological basis. Dr Dennerstein said while the exact cause of PMS remains controversial, hormone tablets used in the trials caused marked relief of premenstrual symptoms. Treatment showed a major beneficial effect in the first month and this improvement was maintained throughout the study. Mock tablets or placebos were also used in the study without the women’s knowledge.
But Dr Dennerstein said the women’s symptoms of stress, state of anxiety and concentration became worse when they were placed on the placebos.
