Blaze hits school

PA Timaru Lake Tekapo School was almost completely destroyed by fire on Saturday. Rugby players at a nearby field saw smoke and raised the alarm, but in spite of being on the scene within two minutes the Tekapo firemen found the main school block, comprising the classroom, library, office block and staff rooms, well ablaze. The Tekapo Fire Service’s deputy chief fire officer, Mr Bill Apes, said the brigade was alerted at 12.18 p.m. The fire was thought to have started in the school’s switchboard.
