19 fewer drownings

PA Wellington Nineteen fewer people drowned between January and May this year than in the corresponding period Hast year, according to provisional Water Safety Council figures. In 1985, a total of 86 people drowned between January 1 and May 31, compared with 67 in 1986. The biggest drop was in those aged between 21 and 30, with 21 deaths in 1985 compared with 10 in

1986. Another big drop was in the over 60s group, with 16 drownings in 1985 compared with eight in 1986. But five children aged between five and 10 years drowned in 1986, compared with one in 1985. All of them drowned in pools. Boating drownings almost halved for the January to May period for 1986, with 12 deaths compared with 22 during that

time in 1985. There were no drownings at lakes and dams reported for that period in 1986, compared with six last year. There were also no scuba-diving drownings reported up to May this year compared with three last year. The figures include drownings caused by motor vehicle accidents, floods and rafting accidents.
