Strain tells at checkouts
By ROBIN CHARTERIS in London Checkout girls are feeling the strain of modern supermarket life to such an extent that many are driven to drink, drugs and even suicide, a trade union conference in London has been told. They suffer from stress caused by long queues, irate and impatient customers, from handling large sums of money and from increasing numbers of armed robberies.
