‘The Press’ Cup lead narrows
Sydenham’s impressive form of late in the Trusteebank Trophy senior rugby competition has carried through to “The Press” Cup contest for sportsmanship and how well a team played.
After getting the most points the previous week — 12 for sportsmanship and eight for constructiveness — Sydenham was awarded the equal best mark of 19 on Saturday.
Once again got the most points for playing to its ability, and it now holds second place in the competition, only one point behind the pacesetter, Linwood.
Suburbs also was awarded 19 points on Saturday, getting 12 points
for sportsmanship, as did its opponent, Lyttelton. It lifted Suburbs from second last place to eleventh in the 16-team competition. Saturday’s points:— Sydenham, sportsmanship 11, constructiveness 8, total 19; Suburbs, 12, 7, 19; Shirley, 11, 7, 18; Christchurch, 11, 7, 18; Old Boys, 10, 7, 17; Lyttelton, 12, 5, 17; Linwood, 11, 5, 16; Albion, 11, 5, 16; Lincoln College, 10, 6, 16; MerivalePapanui, 10, 6, 16; Belfast, 8, 5, 13; Hornby, 8,5, 13; Burnside, 7,6, 13; University, 6,7, 13; Marist, 7,5, 12; New Brighton, 7,5, 12. Total points after four rounds: Linwood 69, Sydenham 68, Christchurch 65, Lincoln College, Shirley 64, High School Old Boys, Lyttelton 63, Hornby 62, New Brighton, Albion 60, Suburbs 58, Burnside, Merivale-Papa-nui 55, Marist, Belfast 54, University 48.
