Miserable day for local teams in fourth round
With two exceptions, both playing away from home, Christchurch teams had a miserable day when fourthround matches in the Le Coq Sportif Chatham Cup soccer competition were played on Saturday. Only Shamrock, 3-0 winners over South Canterbury United at Timaru, and Classique Technical, with a 20 win over Waihopai, at Invercargill, had much to cheer about as two Dunedin and two Invercargill clubs progressed to the last 32 in the national knockout competition.
Shamrock needed extra time to overcome South Canterbury. A Paul Clark penalty gave it the lead early in the first spell of extra time. The spot kick was re-taken twice, but Clark displayed a cool head by converting all three shots. Sasha Radujko and Gary Scarlett got the other goals. John Ellis, Technical’s coach, made a rare appearance in the starting line-up and got his team’s opening goal against Waihopai. Anthony Dawson added the second for a satisfying victory.
The toughest assignment for the Christchurch clubs fell to Andas Halswell United, and it made a good fist of its battle with the Rothmans
League club, Wickliffe Press Dunedin City, at Halswell Domain. In a fast free-flow-ing match, Dunedin won, 2-1, but Halswell can take plenty of credit from the match.
It conceded goals early in each half and had enough opportunities in the second half to have kept its place in the cup field. The central defender, Michael Irving, put Dunedin ahead in the third minute with a close range header from Mike McGarry’s delicate cross from the right. Halswell bounced back in the twenty-fourth minute. Wayne Burt’s long ball caught Dunedin’s defence square, and when the veteran goalkeeper, Jim Taylor, only partly deflected the initial shot from his Halswell namesake, Allan Carville was perfectly placed to score.
Although Carville and Mel Jones caused problems for the Dunedin defence, Baisweil’s back-line had its hands full containing the gifted McGarry and Mark Weddle. McGarry got the decisive goal, nine minutes into the second half, weaving past two defenders before beating Baisweil’s goal-keeper, Steve Reeves from 10 metres.
Carville had two glorious chances in the second half,
Weddle and Graham Marshall wasted similarly promising situations but the best chance fell to Jones. Unmarked six metres out, he had only Taylor to beat. His first time shot was blocked by Taylor’s leg, and Dunedin, which got better as the match wore on, survived. A controversial goal early in the second half sent Budget House Rangers tumbling out at the hands of Queen’s Park, of Invercargill, at English Park. The Queen’s Park striker, Mark Buchanan, broke clear and, with the linesman flagging for off-side, ran on to score. The referee, Arthur Edwards, over-ruled his fellow official and the goal stood, much to Rangers’ disbelief.
University, the lowestgraded of the Canterbury representatives, put up a plucky performance before going down, 3-2, to Invercargill Thistle in the early game at English Park. Thistle went ahead through George Mark after half an hour, but by the interval. University was ahead, courtesy of goals from its captain, Paul Bodgson, and Patrick Butler.
Early in the second half, Thistle equalised through Grant Cuff, and the winner came from a defender, John Ottley.
Goals by John Brand, from the penalty spot, and Phil Walker were not enough for Sharp Copiers Western to survive against Caversham in Dunedin. Neil Wright scored twice for Caversham, including a penalty, Marc Chidley got the second and Aaron Munro put a late fight-back beyond Western’s reach with the fourth goal. In the other southern region match played in Dunedin, Green Island beat North End United, 6-3. Burndale United retained its unbeaten record in the premier division with a 2-0 win over the second-placed Western on Saturday. In the other matches, Shamrock and Riccarton drew, 1-1; Moorhouse Mazda High School Old Boys beat Rangers, 3-1; Christchurch United had a 33 draw with Cashmere; and Nomads United, in a bottom-of-the-table clash, thrashed Woolston, 5-1.
