Controllers fail medicals

PA Auckland The serious shortage of air traffic controllers at Auckland is being compounded by the compulsory retirement of controllers who have failed medical checks. > Three supervisees out 'of 10 have lose' their licences so far this year,

two of them in the last 10 days.

The Air Traffic Controllers’ Association says the stress of the job has contributed to their health problems and that the medical failure rate seems to be increasing. The association’s “vicepresident, Mr Dean Dal-

zell, said another senior controller might have to retire and that six more controllers throughout New Zealand also faced the possibility of losing their licences. “We do not make it to retirement because of the stressful nature of the job,” he said.
