Palestinians

Sir, —If the Palestinians want to live in an independent Palestine, as J. Watson (May 10) asserts, this is taking place. Jewish Palestine is catering for the Jews and is independent. Jordan, which is independent, serves as a haven for Arab Palestinians. There is nothing wrong in rehabilitating Jewish refugees and immigrants. Britain was specifically charged under the mandate given to her by the League of Nations to facilitate the close settlement of Jews on the land. However, a lot of Arab immigration, which was not decidedly part of the provision for the Jewish national home, took place illegally. Had the British formally acknowledged this illegal flow of Arabs into the area earmarked for the Jews, that flow would have been condemned by the international community. In fact, had the British been forthright about this illegal traffic, the League of Nations Permanent Mandates Commission would have put a stop to it. — Yours, etc.,

JOEL MANYAM. May 28, 1986.
