New technology cherry orchard

One of New Zealand’s largest new technology cherry orchards is planned in a $2.35 million project at Roxburgh East, according to the promoters, in a prospectus.

Cherrycorp, Ltd, and Company, a special partnership, plans the development of a 49 hectare orchard on Kinaston Road, Roxburgh East, almost half of which will be planted in cherries. Their target market will be Japan.

Cherrycorp will be managed by Sunharvest Orchards, Ltd, whose directors are Mr F. B. McKenzie, managing

director of Alliance Textiles, Ltd, chairman of Angora Corporation, a director of Freesia Meats, Ltd, and a director of a number of private companies, Mr I. McN. Douglas, a Dunedin lawyer, Mr A. J. McPherson, a Central Otago orchard developer, who will be the company’s managing director, and Mr G. A. McDonald, a Roxburgh orchardist.

The directors plan to develop the orchard over a two year period, planting several varieties of fruit, including apricots and apples, as well as the cherry block.
