More imports freed
PA Wellington The Government has lifted import licencing restrictions on bicycles, sporting equipment, toys and many other goods after a review prompted by the Australians under the C.E.R. agreement. The review, under C.E.R. exemption procedures, covers 99 item codes.
The exemptions stemmed from a request made by the Australian Government last year asking that New Zealand examine the need for licencing across a wide range of C.E.R. item codes, said the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Caygill. The over-all effect
would be to remove any quantitative access restrictions for a range of Australian goods. The exemptions were in line with the Government’s policy of progressive elimination of import licencing, Mr Caygill said.
Other measures would be taken to liberalise access for Australia, including increasing the Exclusive Australian licence access for nine item codes covering a range of yarns and woven fabrics, pet food and machine tools.
The present global licence on demand and Australian licence on demand lists would be exempt, except for a few item codes.
In addition, all items that would go to global on demand licencing from July 1 under the phaseout programme would be made exempt licence from Australia from that date.
