A.C.C. payment

Sir, — I refer to your report (May 28) of the Accident Compensation Commission paying a convicted murderer $18,300 because he broke bones while attempting a prison escape. I note that (a) nowhere in the A.C.C. Act is the word “accident” defined; (b) breaking bones in itself is not necessarily an accident; (c) the reasonably predictable consequence of a deliberate act is not an accident. If a person chose to hang himself and his neck was broken, it would not be regarded as an accident. Prisoner Harris, therefore, did not suffer an accident and as an A.C.C. levy-payer, I would appreciate the return of my share of the $18,300. —- Yours, etc.,

MARGARET MOON. May 29, 1986.
