U.S. index up 1.5%
The U.S. index of leading indicators, a key gauge of future economic growth, rose a sharp 1.5 per cent in April, and suggested that the American economy may enjoy an upsurge in the months to come. The rise in the index, released by the Commerce Department, exceeded the most optimistic assessments of private economists and might help to clear up the uncertainty which had surrounded U.S. economic trends in recent weeks. The April increase compares • with March gain of 0.9 points.
