Vandals smash car windows
Hammer-happy vandals have done $BOOO damage to cars parked in a Hornby used-car lot.
The 23 cars were battered at the Motorcorp South yard on the Main South Road sometime between 8.30 p.m. on Thursday and 8 a.m. yesterday. Windscreens, rear windows, and some side windows were smashed.
“I have never seen anything like it,” said a spokesman for the company, Mr John Haig, yesterday.
His staff were busy for most of the day replacing glass so that the cars would be secure by evening.
The firm had had “tremendous” help from a local panelbeater and carwrecking firms, said Mr Haig. Replacement glass could not be found for two vehicles, which will be kept inside in the meantime.
A Hornby police spokes-
man, Senior-Sergeant David Sands, was “simply appalled” at the vandalism.
Senior-Sergeant Sands said he was particularly concerned because the local shopping area had been subject to vandalism up to about four months ago, but that had stopped when the police arrested “most if not all” of the offenders.
“Now it appears things may be starting again.” Senior-Sergeant Sands was sure someone must have heard or seen something of the incident
“It would have taken more than just a little time.”
“I would be more than happy to receive information, even anonymously,” he said.
