Rebels told not to sign
The rebel rugby players in South Africa have been advised by a lawyer not to sign a statement sought by the New Zealand Rugby Union that they are not being paid for the tour. According to the “Dominion” newspaper, the rebel players’ lawyer, Mr Shane Treadwell, has advised the players against signing one of the documents. It quotes Mr Treadwell as saying that he had sent advice to the players in South Africa. “The first document was the normal one players are asked to sign
when they go overseas. That was fair enough," he said. “However, there was an additional one (concerning payment for the tour). I am going to bring that up with the union. I advised the players not to sign that one at this stage,” Mr Treadwell said. He said he was waiting to hear from his contact in South Africa. The chairman of the Rugby Union, Mr Russell Thomas, said the players had until June 3 to sign the forms and return them to the union.
