Wage round
Sir,—We are approaching another wage round and what worries me is the inevitability of the whole process. It does not seem to matter that export receipts are down, our over-all productivity down, internal and external deficits continuing, and so on. If the world falls down tomorrow it seems we are still going to have that wage increase and all the jazz that goes with it — Higher Salaries Commission, relativities, trickle-downs, etc. Of course, the equation must balance up somewhere, and I think paying ourselves more than we have earned over the last few years is the root cause of unemployment, deterioration of health and education services and the need to save money by reorganising the Public Service. If Rogernomics were strictly applied, then the next wage round would see a decrease in wages for every wage and salary earner in the land, not an increase. — Yours, etc.,
ALAN FALLOON May 22, 1986.
