New form of robbery
NZPA Sydney A new form of “armed” robbery has hit Sydney — “A.I.D.S. raids” — and the police fear such attacks could become more common.
According to a report yesterday, a man claiming he had acquired immune deficiency syndrome got away with sAust7oo ($924) this week after threatening to pass on the virus to a shop assistant in a Bondi clothing store. The police said it was the second such raid in
less than a week. They do not believe the two robberies are connected. In the latest incident, the police said a man walked into the Bondi shop on Monday evening and gave the assistant a note which said: “I have A.I.D.S. I don’t want to give it to you. But if you don’t do what I say I will.” The man, described as thin with a very pale
complexion, produced a syringe before fleeing with the money. The police believe he threatened to inject the woman with blood if the money was not handed over. On May 14 a “sickly looking” man wearing dark glasses gave a similar note to a woman teller at a T.A.B. agency in east Sydney and escaped with a big sum of money.
