U.S. hotel chain looking for sites

An American-based international hotel chain is interested in hotel sites in Christchurch and Queenstown. The chain, which as yet has no hotels in New Zealand, will send a team to the South Island in the next few weeks to look at sites. In the meantime, the Christchurch City Council was looking for possible

sites, said Cr Morgan Fahey. Cr Fahey and the airport director, Mr Hugh McCarroll, met representatives of the chain on their recent visit to the United States.

He could not release the name of the chain at present, Cr Fahey said. “Obviously they do not want their competitors to know of their interests.” The hotel team would visit both Christchurch and Queenstown. Cr Fahey said he thought there might be some sites along Rolleston Avenue that could be available. The site would have to be within walking distance of city attractions. If New Zealand attracted only 1 per cent of the cancelled American tourists now not travelling to Europe because of recent events there, it would be a tremendous boost for the tourist industry here, Cr Fahey said.

He and Mr McCarroll had talked to airlines about their services flying into Christchurch.
