Oil drilling gives hope

PA Wellington Hydrocarbon shows had been encountered from 390 metres to 477 metres in the Niagara-2 oil well, near Lake Brunner, in Westland, said New Zealand Oil and Gas, Ltd, yesterday. The shows were within thin sand stringers and the zone equated to the shallowest recorded hydrocarbon shows in the Niagara-1 well, the company said in its weekly hydrocarbon report. The company also reported that the Te Ranga-1 well off the North Taranaki coast was at a depth of 2003 metres and had no significant hydrocarbon shows this week.
