Downturn concerns shearers
PA Dunedin Otago shearers are concerned about the impact the downturn in fanning is having on their industry. The New Zealand Industrial Union, which covers shearers, has held meetings in Lawrence, Milton, Ranfurly and Balclutha to discuss the situation. Meetings are planned for Oamaru, Ashburton and Rangiora. Members of the industry are concerned about the effect the farming downturn is likely to have on job security, a field officer with the union In Dunedin, Mr Geoff Pere, said. They are also concerned that any excessive movements in wage inceases will have a detrimental effect on length of employment The threat of farmers forming co-operatives also has union members worried, Mr Pere said. The union will meet employers for the third round of conciliation talks for the Shearers’ Award in Wellington later this month. During the second round of talks, employers . made an offer that was being considered. The i union’s response would be made known at the next round on May 22 and 23, 1 Mr Pere said.
