Low beef prices spark talks
PA Wellington The Meat Board expects to hear from the Government in the next few days after talks yesterday over slumping beef prices. The chairman of the Meat Board, Mr Adam Begg, said that further discussions were now planned among the Government and its advisers, after a 30-minute meeting with the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Moyle. He hoped to hear from
Mr Moyle before the end of the week as payments would have to be made to farmers in a matter of days. Late last month the Prime Minister Mr Lange, said the Government would negotiate with the board over ways to help beef farmers hit by falling prices as beef prices dropped below the minimum price set for the season. Mr Lange then ruled out the payment of Government subsidises.
