Confucius making a comeback

NZPA-AP Peking An international symposium on the Chinese philosopher, Confucius, will be held next year in the ancient sage’s hometown of Qufu in Shandong province, the State-run Xinhua News Agency reported. The conference is being organised by the China Confucius Foundation, which was launched in 1984. The foundation is planning a larger conference for 1989, the 2540th anniversary of the birth of Confucius, Xinhua said. It quoted Kuang Yarning, president of the foundation, as saying: “Our studies should help

us acquire from ancient Chinese civilisation ideas which are useful to the development of socialist culture and morality.” Confucius was reviled as a feudal reactionary during the Leftist 1966-76 “Cultural Revolution,” when radical Red Guards destroyed Confucian temples and rampaged through his birthplace. The philosopher’s reputation is slowly being restored, and Qufu has been opened as a tourist site. Confucius, who lived from 551 to 479 8.C., preached a strict hierarchy of relationships in government and family, and rule by the educated elite.
