Car log books

Sir, — It seems that “Big Brother” is becoming ever more watchful. I refer to the road log required by the Government of anyone wanting to claim vehicle expenses. I find this repugnant to say the least. It implies guilt until innocence is proven. A solution would be for the Government to curb its expenditure so that the taxpayer doesn’t have to curb his. — Yours, etc., J. MORRIS. Ashburton, April 20, 1986.

Sir, — I congratulate Alan West (April 23) for speaking out against this latest incursion which is being accepted without a murmur. To my mind this is something more insidious than the South African “Pass Law.” Not only do we now have to carry a “pass” on behalf of our motor vehicle but we also have to account for every hour of the day and night in it — something

no black South African has to do. No doubt a new division of the Inland Revenue Department will have to be set up to audit these documents and carry out spot checks (random stopping) to see they are being kept correctly. I for one, refuse to comply with this new regulation. — Yours, etc. M. LOMAX. April 23, 1986.
