Chance for Rationale in Leopard Classic
Special correspondent Auckland With 1200 m to go, as against 1400 last time when she went under so narrowly, at Ellerslie, Rationale looks well in line for the Avondale Jockey Club’s big two-year-old prize tomorrow. As a further help in the $30,000 Leopard Classic, Rationale drew inside the middle for the start, at No. 6, whereas except for Taiaha and Miss Emma, the other best-performed will be going from further out. Miss Emma and Taiaha, with No. 3 and No. 2 respectively, are particularly well placed. Each is quick and almost certain to be very prominent. Ray Verner of Takanini, was one trainer entitled to disappointment with Tuesday’s barrier draw. He put three horses in the race — Tri Bell, Starline and Matrina — and they drew Nos 11, 12 and 13. Rationale turned on a fine performance last time when the first filly home, and just a head and a long neck behind Precocious Lad and Auto Air, in the Radio Pacific Sires’ Produce Stakes. The first leg of the double, the New Zealand Sires’ Championship, presents Regal Advocate with an opportunity to pick up
his third win at Avondale this year. A four-year-old gelding by Vice Regal (the field is restricted to the stocks of New Zealand-bred sires), Regal Advocate won a 2200 m at Avondale in February and another, when he last raced, a fortnight ago. Two of the more interesting runners against Regal Advocate will be Friple, from Foxton, and Cameron Bay, from Wanganui. Both are in good form, Cameron Bay specially with wins in three of his last five starts. Clarkin Road, surely one of the most consistent place-getters anywhere, and Matamua and Silver Jewel appeal most in the second leg, the Hannigan Intermediate, over 2000 metres.
