Skipper Dale to cap off notable season in cup

By

JEFF SCOTT

Skipper Dale could cap off a notable season by adding the last recognised staying race on the calendar for tight class pacers, the $20,000 New Brighton Cup, to an already outstanding record at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. The Ashburton-trained gelding has taken the rise to the best classes in his stride, capturing the $50,000 Lion Brown Easter Cup at tomorrow’s distance of 3200 m, against a similar field late last month. His 10 wins to date from 17 starts have been completed in tradesmanlike fashion and his firstclass record speaks for itself. Brilliant beginnings have enabled Pat O’Reilly, jun., to either lead-up or take a trail and this asset should be used to good effect again tomorrow in the first leg of the T.A.B. double.

Our Mana, the runnerup in the last two New Zealand Cups and the 1985 Easter Cup winner at the distance, came through the pack on the home turn to finish strongly for third in Skipper Dale’s Easter Cup last time out, and will have admirers for this. Freightman indicated he is ready for a bold effort after his 3min 21.1 s (2600 m trials win last week. The Lordship entire, which jointly with Malaz set a national record for 2600 m (mobile)

of 3min 14.6 s back in January, met a slight check when mounting his run in the Easter Cup last month and if tomorrow’s race is run at a true clip, Freightman should be right in the thick of the finish. Jester Chance looks up to this class after winning four of his last seven starts, including the Cheviot Cup from 40m behind at this distance and a 2700 m event at Thames over Ben and Direct Kiwi earlier this month.

Last year’s winner, Lord Louie, which was second to Freightman at last week’s trials then won at the Rangiora trials on Monday in 3min 26.7 s (2600 m and Ruthless, which set a track record at tomorrow’s distance of 4min 14.4 s on the grass at' Methven last Saturday, are others capable of getting into the finish with peak efforts. Rolls Hanover should be given another chance to redeem himself in the second leg of the T.A.B. double and treble, the

Countdown Foodmarkets Handicap, also over 3200 m. He was pulled up after being checked by fallen runners at Methven last Saturday, but is well above average and would not surprise by returning to winning form here. Vicki McQuade, a Imin 59.5 s miler at the trials last week, has looked on the verge of winning form lately and warrants respect, while Early Riser has not had much luck lately and could be the surprise package.

Race 6 D, TF 4.15 NEW BRIGHTON CUP $20,000; OC (C 8 and 9 eligible); 3200 m 1 7050 Coastal Trader 1 K.
