Murder suspect to have psych, probe

PA Rotorua A youth charged with the murder of a traffic officer and attempting to murder a policeman was remanded to Tokanui Psychiatric Hospital when he appeared before Judge Monaghan in the District Court at Rotorua. Ross Kameta was accused of the the murder of Traffic Officer Robin Dudding and the attempted murder of Constable Lucky Tuti Katene on April 7. The Judge remanded Kameta to May 2 but said that the Court would not require him to appear on that day. In seeking the remand the Crown prosecutor, Mr Pat Savage, presented the Court with a certificate from a psychiatrist. Kameta’s counsel, Mr

Peter Birks, told the court he would also be requesting a psychiatric report.

Kameta was allowed to sit during his brief appearance. He was dressed in jeans, with a blue jacket over a red checked shirt.

His parents were the only members of the public in the court.
