London children smoking

By ROBIN CHARTERIS in London An anti-smok-ing campaign aimed at eight and nine-year-olds is under way in East London.

Sports stars are banding together with local youth leaders to warn youngsters in Redbridge and Ilford of the dangers of smoking.

Says a youth leader, Christa Baumann: “We have found that a lot of children of eight, nine and upwards are smoking. It seems to be a craze at the moment and it is definitely getting worse. “Most parents do not know. We have got to make people aware of this and stamp it out.”

The six-week campaign is being helped by sports stars including the English basketball captain, Paul Stimpson, West Ham players Alan Dickens and George Parris, the international cross-country runner, Dave Clarke, and the badminton champion, Nora Perry.
