National would guarantee prices
PA Wellington A National Government would underwrite producer board minimum prices, said the Opposition spokesman on finance, Mr George Gair. Mr Gair, and the spokesman on agriculture, Mr John Falloon, said National would, by way of guarantee, facilitate the provision of self-balancing farm produce price stabilisation schemes. Such guarantees would be on an ongoing basis, subject to review and
would be denominated in New Zealand currency. There was no guarantee facility for the Meat Board, they said. “If the week-end schedules are below the current beef minimum price, then the board cannot fund the minimum price because the Government has removed the Reserve Bank facility, and has not yet made the decision to allow the board to fund the minimum price scheme from its own resources.”
