Timaru link opens

Franz Josef’s loss has proved to be Timaru’s gain as far as the small West Coast airline, Coast Air, is concerned. The airline made its inaugural flight from Christchurch to Timaru yesterday and planned to fly two return trips a day on week-days, said Mr John Royds, the airline’s managing director. The Greymouth-based company became interested in the service when its plans to make tourist flights to Franz Josef Glacier fell through after the airstrip there was washed out, he said. As a result, the airline looked for other flights which would be viable and enable its 20-seat Twin Otter to be used to its full capacity. The ChristchurchTimaru link was an obvious choice because Timaru was not fully served throughout the day by other airlines. The service will at first be on a trial basis, but Mr Royds said bookings were already reasonable.
