Hockey victory to N.Z.
NZPA-AAP Sydney New Zealand registered its first win of the Esanda women’s hockey tournament, thrashing the Australian under-21 team 4-1, at Homebush, Sydney, yesterday. New Zealand led, 2-1, at half-time and ran out a convincing winner after losing its opening two matches. Australia, however, who drew first blood with Fiona Pak Poy scoring in the sixth minute. The New Zealanders came back strongly, with first Jenny McDonald netting in the ninth minute and then Tina Bell scoring in the sixteenth minute to give New Zealand a 2-1 lead.
Bell, the star New Zealand forward, continued her outstanding series with a second goal in the fifty-second minute from a strong drive from eight metres out.
The wing, Jan Martin, sealed the match in the sixty-first minute, slapping a backhand shot into the net for the 4-1 scoreline.
The spirited young Australians never stopped trying and launched many attacking raids, but the majority were defused by the skill of the New Zealand defender, Mary Clinton.
The New Zealand coach, Wayne Boyd, was pleased with the performance and said he was looking forward to the clash with the in-form Korea on Tuesday. “We will be able to gauge how much progress we have made in this series by how we go against the Koreans,” he said. “I intend to mark them very closely — something which hasn’t been done in their two wins so far.” Earlier matches—-Page 27
