More J.A.L. flights

PA Wellington Japan Air Lines will almost double its seat capacity to New Zealand next year, says the Minister of Tourism, Mr Moore. He has told the airline’s assistant general manager of public relations and international affairs in the Asia-Oceania region, Mr T. Nishikawa, that New Zealand needs the flights earlier. Mr Moore said he

feared a bottleneck at Christmas if there was no immediate improvement. J.A.L. has two return flights from Japan a week. "Our growth of visitors from Japan was 20 per cent last year. We have hit the magical 50,000 a year number which triggers Japanese interest and investment,” Mr Moore said.

He has discussed hotel investment with J.A.L. and other ways it could work with New Zealand.

"I would like to see Japanese investment in large-scale hotels,” he said.

“If we can get J.A.L. committed to beds on the ground, its immense marketing resource will be used to promote New Zealand,” Mr Moore said.
