Freezing workers review strike
PA Auckland Striking freezing workers in the top half of the North Island might decide soon that it is not worth while standing alone indefinitely for the wage rise.
Their southern counterparts went back to work more than a fortnight ago and on Friday agreement was reached on a $35 a week rise. Northern workers want 15.5 per cent extra.
After eight weeks on strike the 8000 workers are estimated to have lost
more than $3O million in wages and freezing companies have lost more in costs and markets. The Auckland union’s executive meets today to hear about the southern negotiations and what the feeling of workers is for staying on strike.
Members will take back to work meetings to-, morrow a recommendation on whether to keep fighting. The union president, Mr Frank Barnard, would not comment last evening on a likely outcome.
