Tests for drivers over 70
PA Wellington The Ministry of Transport has clarified a statement made on Thursday by the Under-Secretary for Transport, Mr Jeffries, concerning driving tests for motorists over 70. Under new procedures that take effect next month, drivers will be required to obtain a medical certificate and undergo an eyesight test just before their seventyfirst birthday, and then renew their licences.
Just before the seventysixth birthday, they must obtain a medical certificate and take a practical driving test before renewing their licences. Before the seventyseventh and subsequent birthdays drivers will be required to obtain a medical certificate and have an eyesight test, and then renew their licences.
Before the seventyeighth and every second birthday thereafter, drivers will have to pass a practical driving test before renewing their licences.
A Ministry spokesman said the changes would come into effect on May 1.
