Squash trio near finals
NZPA staff correspondent London New Zealand’s top squash trio of Susan Devoy, Ross Norman and Stuart Davenport are through to the final stages of the British Open. They have all advanced to the quarterfinals, to be held at Wembley tomorrow.
Devoy, aged 22, beat the lowly-ranked Liz Brown, of England, 9-3, 94, 9-1, in 19 minutes at East Grinstead, with the final game lasting only two minutes. Ross Norman made light work of the Asian No. 1, Peter Hill (Singapore), beating him 9-3, 94, 9-0, in 38 minutes. After the rest day Davenport will play Greg Pollard and Norman will meet another talented Australian, Rodney Martin.
Davenport moved into the quarterfinals with a three-set win over the Australian, Kelvin Smith. Smith has proved a dark horse at tournaments this year but the thirdseeded Davenport disposed of him 9-3, 9-2, 9-0. The defending champion, Jahangir Khan, progressed to the last 16 with a 9-1, 9-2, 9-2, win over the Swedish No. 1, Jan-Ulf Soderberg. England’s Lisa Opie brought the New Zealander, Donna Gurran’s tournament to an end, beating her 9-2, 9-0, 9-5.
