Harder penalties supported
PA Wellington The police fully support proposed tougher penalties for violent offending and the Governnment’s decision to set up a commitee of inquiry into violence, says the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Mai Churches. “The level of violence has concerned the police for some time,” he said.
“Reported violence rose 3.8 per cent to 21,642 offences last year. Any moves which might reverse the trend are to i be welcomed.” | The Minister of Justice, | Mr Palmer, announcing ( the new measures, said that a Crimes Amendment Bill would be drafted with the highest priority.
