$3M Riccarton development

A 20-year-old service station on Riccarton Road is being demolished to make way for a $3 million shopping and office complex. Demolition of Clyde Collins Motor Services, Ltd, at the corner of Riccarton Road and Harakeke Street, began a week ago and should be complete by Wednesday. The service station was sold to the developer of the complex, Gillman Estates, in April, 1985. Development of the two-storey complex would begin at the end of the month and should be ready for occupation by November, according to Mr Brian Gillman, of Gillman Estates. When complete, the 929 sq m ground floor would be leased to retailers and the top floor for offices. The complex, which has been named Broadway, would not attempt to com-

pete with Riccarton Mall, said Mr Gillman. It was much smaller, offering space for four to 10 shops at most, and was of a different nature. Unlike the mall, where shoppers could browse, Broadway was intended as a centre that shoppers would drive to for a specific purpose. With its broad frontage on Riccarton Road and 70 car-parks, it would be an ideal site for home furnishing and appliance retailers, he said. Tenancy for three-quar-ters of the complex has already been arranged, but Mr Gillman would not divulge the nature of the tenancy. The complex will have vehicle access from Riccarton Road and Harakeke Street, landscaping and a service lane running behind it from Harakeke Street into Straven Road.
