Doctor guilty of stealing drugs

After a retirement of more than 10 hours, until early this morning, a jury in the District Court found a Christchurch doctor guilty of the theft of a total of 124 methadone tablets which he had prescribed on dates last June for a terminally ill patient The doctor, Keith Robert John Cameron, aged 49, was acquitted by the jury on 10 charges of theft of drugs, and also acquitted on four charges of false pretence relating to prescriptions allegedly submitted to a pharmacist for drugs for the patient The charges on which Cameron was found guilty

were the theft of 36 methadone tablets on July 4, and theft of 28, 30 and 30 tablets on three dates in June. On the June charges he was found not guilty of the theft of morphine, associated in the same charges. The morphine involved in the charges on which Cameron was found not guilty totalled ampoules. On the four charges involving the theft of methadone tablets, Judge Sheehan remanded Cameron on bail to May 6 for a probation report and sentence. Earlier report, page 8
